A city woman is receiving treatment after being bitten by a rabid skunk outside of her State Street home Thursday.
Jefferson County Pubic Health says tests on the skunk came back positive for rabies after it was shot by police.
Rabies is fatal if not treated shortly after exposure.
Public Health officials say all pets should be kept up to date with their vaccinations.
Children should also be taught to stay away from wild animals and residents should not leave food outside as that tends to attract animals.
