GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) – Three people are in custody after U.S. Customs and Border Protection say an individual from Brazil, who resides in Canada, tried to smuggle two people, who are citizens of Spain and Brazil, into the U.S. via jet ski.

The U.S. Border Patrol agents say they found the three stuck in the ice near the southern part of Beaver Island State Park.

Two were able to walk across the ice to the Grand Island shoreline, but the third had to be rescued by the Grand Island Fire Department using ropes and a small inflatable rescue craft.

According to Customs and Border Protection, all three were evaluated at the scene by paramedics before being taken into custody.

Grand Island Fire Department was assisted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Air and Marine Operations.
