(WETM) – New York City police officers grabbed a baby from a mother’s arms after she refused to stand up.

The incident happened at a Social Services office in Brooklyn, New York.

Security Officers claimed Jasmine Headley refused to get up

She’d been sitting on the floor after waiting four hours to find out why her Child Care benefits ended.

A video shows Headley holding on to her 1-year-old son while police forcefully pulled him out of her arms.

Community leaders say the 23-year-old mother had taken the day off from work and didn’t have anywhere else to sit in the packed waiting area.

The video doesn’t show what happened in the moments leading up to the incident, but they say the situation should never have escalated.

Community leaders are calling on police to launch a full investigation.

“There needs to be a complete, thorough investigation. everything from the security, to the police to hr to staff, how do we give people the help that they need and not further complicate the challenges that they see in their lives,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

Lisa Schriebersdorf, the Executive Director Brooklyn Defender Services said, “this is a tragic situation, really for somebody who’s just trying to keep her job.”

Headley was charged with resisting arrest, obstruction, trespassing and child endangerment.

She’s being held in jail due to an unrelated outstanding warrant New Jersey.

The NYPS called the video “troubling” and said the encounter is under review.
