(WSYR-TV) – New York State gearing up for major changes as the Raise the Age legislation goes into effect Monday.
The change would impact 16 and 17 year olds who were previously processed as adults.
Starting Monday, they would no longer be housed in adult jails, but rather be sent to juvenile detention center. Also, some would have an opportunity to seal criminal convictions after a decade.
As a statewide effort, New York has put aside $260 million to help counties cover the costs of the launch, construction and renovation of current facilities.
