Derek Anderson’s Bills career isn’t done just yet.

Sean McDermott said on Monday that Josh Allen will not play against the Patriots Monday night. It will be his second missed start due to the elbow injury suffered against the Texans.

Anderson will again start for the Bills.

Sunday was the 9th time in 24 games under McDermott that the Bills lost by more than 10 points. That’s the most in the league. It’s the 7th time a McDermott team lost by 20 or more. The previous five seasons of Bills football only featured six such defeats.

“It wasn’t the step we wanted to take,” McDermott said Monday. “I didn’t think we won the line of scrimmage, both offensively and defensively. And from that, things didn’t go our way.”

LeSean McCoy is in concussion protocol. He did travel back from Indianapolis with the team, but McDermott provided no hint as to whether McCoy would be ready to play for Monday Night. That is standard for most concussion situations.

The prospect of facing the mighty Patriots with a veteran quarterback three weeks off the street and a second string, 30 year old running back in Chris Ivory is not ideal.

It seems like a recipe for another blowout loss. McDermott’s best soliloquy of the day was addressing this topic.

“Take care of the football and you give yourself a chance by the way you play to win based off of who you are and who your opponent is. I think we’d all like to be out there posting 50 points. I’m sure there are a lot of head coaches that would sleep a lot easier if they knew they were getting 50 points every night. That’s just not where we are right now,” McDermott said.

“We just have to understand who we are, where we are in this process of getting this thing going in the right direction. I do believe there’s been wins. It just hasn’t been, like this last week, on the scoreboard. But, we’re developing some young players who are also learning how to play in this league and are continuing to grow every week.”

Defensive end Trent Murphy was listed as “week to week” with a knee injury. McDermott also termed Allen “week to week”, but unlike Allen, the Bills head coach felt Murphy has a chance to play against New England.
