SU pulls away from St. Rose to win it first game of the preseason by 31 points.
Playing without a single healthy point guard, it took the Syracuse offense a little while to get going. Tyus Battle played the entire first half running the point and did not make a field goal before intermission. Battle finished 1-for-10 from the field in the game and settled for seven points as the Orange pulled away for an 80-49 victory.
Buddy Boeheim got the start alongside Battle in the backcourt and the coach’s son made the most of his opportunity. Buddy went for 19 points and made three of his seven attempts from three-point range, including one right at the buzzer to end the first half. Elijah Hughes also started, taking the place of Marek Dloezaj, and showed that he can provide an offensive spark by pouring in 19 points.
Oshae Brissett led everyone with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Paschal Chukwu also finished with double-digit rebounds. Chukwu grabbed 11 boards and scored five points.
Jim Boeheim said afterwards that he expects Jalen Carey to return to practice on Monday and also mentioned Howard Washington may return to practice Monday as well. He added if both can be “full-go” in practice, then they should play in Wednesday’s exhibition game.
Boeheim also said that he “remains hopeful” Frank Howard will be able to return to action around the time of the regular season opener. He added that the “next 10 days or so” will be very telling for Howard.
Syracuse closes out the preseason schedule next Wednesday against Le Moyne.
